Camera shy or ignoring me???? The rest of my walk at Salmon Creek. . .

This little bird was very photogenic but either shy or trying to give me a hard time. I kept hoping it would turn around but no luck. It's coloring was so pretty tho so I kept trying, hoping I could see it better. Maybe another time. . .

I found out what kind of bird it is:

Steller's Jay..
(Cyanocitta stelleri)
"Cool fact: Steller’s Jay has the most extensive range of any North American jay, from Alaska along the coast to central California, and through the Rocky Mountains and high mountain areas of Central America to Nicaragua."

Go here to read more about it. Steller's Jay

Think I will just tack on the rest of my journey to Salmon Creek Greenway here. The bird above was also found on my Salmon Creek walking adventure.

This is how I know it is my bus stop for this trail--I love the waterfall located so close to the freeway that goes over the road the bus travels on its way to the community of Salmon Creek.

You cross over the bridge here to enter the Klineline swimming hole, park and pathway.

This is the view from the entrance bridge looking east.

The view, looking west from the bridge entrance, is shown here.

Klineline Pond, now empty of its myriad of summer visitors, provides a simple beauty. They brag that it was once a place to pan for gold. Now it provides a cool spot for hot summer days or for a fisherman to try his luck.

Another view of Klineline Pond.

Yet a third view of the pond, still in the loneliness of the trees, just casting shadows.

The Klineline pond is quite extensive and has roped off swimming areas. During the summer there are lifeguards too.

This is the bridge that I crossed over to the dirt path where I cut my leg on the thorns that I talked about in the last post. It is to the east of the main pond.

This sign showed that the eastern trail ends because it meets with the freeway nearby. I love how our city has walking trails all over in spite of the many freeways and busy highways. Our city really cares about the walker/biker and healthy people.

You can see the I-5 Interstate near the trail.

I then headed back towards the swimming hole and that's when I hurt my leg. (see last post)

This is one of the fishing docks at Klineline Pond. I sat down here to stop the bleeding on my leg. Success and I was able to continue my trek.

Before I could find the ducks I was looking for at Klineline, I noticed these beautiful cattails. They were in a separate pond to the west of the main "swimming hole."

When I first spotted it, I thought it was just one. I was wrong as you can see by my next photo. . .

Almost looks like one duck is kissing the reflection of the other! I like how they swam opposite each other to create this photo for me! Ü It was like they were performing a dance for me. Off on my trek past the playground was next.

Isn't this playground equipment unusual? It definitely looks like something I would explore if I were a few years younger! It gives kids a chance to use their imaginations while exploring and playing in a beautiful setting.

This tree near the children's playground is definitely in a fall mode.

This is an example of the paved path I walked on during this journey along Salmon Creek Walkway. There used to be many trails in use up here for horse riding and some still exist parallel to the Salmon Creek Greenway.

One of the flowers I spotted near the baseball fields.

And another one of the same type but a different color.

There are lots of open grassy areas along the pathway. They are just as beautiful as the flowers and trees.

Another meadow's simple beauty.

And yet another. ..

Salmon Creek which runs adjacent to the trail provided me with some picturesque scenes.

Another view. . . The beauty of Salmon Creek was refreshing to me and to the eyes of the many hikers I met all along the trail.

More . . .

Another view.

No wonder I enjoy walking this trail!

Trees sometimes framed the beauty in the distance.

I like how this limb was framed by the blue sky -- all the clouds had traveled east and a very cloudy day turned into a most glorious day to go for a walk!

I even found beauty in this weed arrangement.

This shows morewildflower/weeds gone to seed.

Saw this plant when the trail was coming to an end.

All along the trail are boulders that might provide a seating area for a weary traveler or just an interesting artifact -- that is what this one was to me. I liked the many sides chipped into its exterior and wonder how they got there? That might be the rockhound in me thinking. . .

You might wonder why I took this photo? Well, remember on my last trip on this trail I got lost . . . well there it is right before me. . . a divided trail that goes to the left and the right. The left one leads to a farm house and the right one continues the trail. I don't think I will ever forget that again. At least I hope not. It would surely help new walkers to this extension of the trail to have a sign that the Salmon Creek trail continues by going right!!!!!!!

Waiting. . .

Waking up early, I waited for the sun to greet me this morning. It got light but the cloud cover was so thick I barely noticed the sun making its early morning appearance. The weatherman said it would only get to the 70's today but the brief threat of rain that some experienced yesterday was supposed to be gone. I hoped so as I had planned to go on a walk today. (see note below)

Anyway, fooling around on different sites that I had saved, I discovered this little challenge to keep my mind occupied for a few minutes at least. lol

So here's the results:
Your Birthdate: January 12

You're a dynamic, charismatic person who's possibly headed for fame.
I wonder if I went down the wrong road when I was heading out?

You tend to charm strangers easily. And you usually can get what you want from them.
This is definitely not me -- maybe they were thinking of my twin??????

Verbally talented, you tend to persuade people with your speaking and writing.
I am not so sue about verbal skills but I do like to write.

You are affectionate and loving, but it's hard for you to commit to any one relationship.
Well, the first part is correct . . . but not so sure about the second. On the other hand, maybe that's why I remain single after ten years of marriage and three kids who are all grown now.

Your strength: Your charm
I know they definitely got this one wrong.

Your weakness: Your extreme manipulation tactics
Two in a row wrong! This shy lady "manipulating" anything/anyone? Impossible!

Your power color: Indigo
Well, blue is a close shade of indigo . . . so not too far off. Then again, "when I am old, I shall wear purple. . . "

Your power symbol: Four leaf clover
Well, since I am not superstitious, i have no need for a 4 leaf clover but had it been a three leaf one, I would say, "YES, that represents the triune God I believe in and that's definitely me!"

Your power month: December

Now, that I can connect to. December brings Christmas celebrations around the world and many of us put up Christmas trees to celebrate. I keep mine up all year long. In fact, it was the main focus when I arranged my small living room in my new "home" last month. I could hardly wait to find it in my storage!

What Does Your Birth Date Mean?

Well, I got to Klineline Pond and before I even walked around it, I injured my leg on a branch of Himalaya Blackberry bushes that had been cut and strewn carelessly on the trail path. . . of course,, taking photos while walking doesn't help to not get entangled in these things. I almost wasn't going to finish my walk but I got the bleeding stopped finally and trudged on, knowing it was going to be a beautiful day for a walk on the Salmon Creek Trail that began where Klineline Pond ended. More pictures coming tomorrow. Tonight I am going to baby my cut on leg. Ü

Simple Beauty

A Cosmos is not high on my list of special flowers. . . but it does have a simple beauty. Usually, I see purple and pink Cosmos but this time I spotted some white ones and just had to photograph them. It almost seems too perfect!

It was an added bonus when the Cosmos got this small visitor!

Maybe Cosmos flowers should be special after all!

Happy 150th Birthday to Vancouver, Washington!

Today is the 150th birthday of our city and we had a big all day celebration. The celebration was held at Esther Short Park, the oldest park in Clark County. It lasted all day.

I got there before the celebration started because the Saturday Market was also there as it is each week March through October. I didn't want to get anything today but I was looking for my Zucchini squash that I get every two weeks -- this one booth saves bigger ones for me for 50 cents apiece! I talked to them about picking up a couple on Sunday afternoon.

I also saw a plant lady that had a neat trellis and I asked her where she got it --she told me she could sell me one if I came back Sunday as she had more at home. I am so glad I arranged to do that because it was perfect for my Schefflera!

While I was getting it, I decided I needed another plant also and got this unusual dark purple with green Coleus.

OK, back to the celebration!

The first entertainment on stage was "ONE OF A KIND DRUMLINE. The drum teacher played with them as he directed the whole band. They were a group of elementary school kids from Marshall Elementary. They were great is not enough praise for these young kids, both boys and girls. I was sad when it ended after 45 minutes of continual playing.

They had musical entertainment all day long until 10:00 PM. In between sets, they and raffles for prizes donated by different stores and also threw Tshirts with the 150th birthday celebration logo on them. (I finally caught a T-shirt on the last batch they had and was happy about that. I would have bought one but they were not for sale.)

There was entertainment for the kids, including games and this giant ball to jump on and roll around.

The pie eating contest was fun to watch. I sure wanted soem of that apple pie but I didn't have the desire to get my face and hair all sticky.

There was a baking contest and many prizes in several categories. I only got to take a photo of this one before the judges shooed me away. . . Ü

A local burger joint here, Burgerville USA, gave out 2,000 free lunches consisting of a Tillamook Cheeseburger and chips of your choice and Pepsi or lemonade. They didn't do this 'til 3:30 so I don't think they had as many takers as they thought they would get because they announced that we could go back for seconds! Of course, I did!
The cake cutting ceremony was a jumble when the mayor said we could get on stage with the baker from the Hilton (located across the street from the park) cut the cake to officially declare the 150th birthdya party event. This is the best "shot" I could get with everyone crowded up there! Well, not everyone but many!

By 6:00 PM, I was tired and walked to the bus station to take a bus home, missing the big bands music and dancing. It was ok. I had a good celebration anyway.

PHOTO HUNTERS #13 --DIRTY

PHOTO HUNTERS HOME
The PHOTO HUNTERS theme this week is dirty and I knew where I would find my “dirty” photos. hehehehehe

I was teaching at a preschool/daycare for awhile and these kids loved to play in the mud and of course I encouraged it. It did not have to be a hot summer day to play with mud. . . on those days, I turned the hose on and each child brought a container of some kind and somethng to stir with. After they got some water from me, they “went to it.”

Those arent’t the photos I will be showing today since I was usually manning the hose, I couldn’t take photo too. Those particular memories are embedded in my heart instead!

Today, I offer winter mud play for the “dirty” theme. Ü The boys loved playing in the mud as much as the girls. Did they get dirty? YUP! That’s a part of growing up. They said they were glad I was their teacher because I let them play in the mud whenever we were out in the play yard. I am glad they liked it too since mud is a part of my "rock" unit!

View from the bus window

I have decided that you can't really take good photos through a dirty window while a bus is moving on a highway but here are some of the ones I tried to capture because the beauty was there. These are from my recent trip up the Gorge to Skamania County. This is one time I wish I drove so I could stop and take photos wherever I went.

"Will I Get a Photo Of That Squirrel Before it Runs Away?" Quick, get your camera out!

I told myself, “Quick get a shot off before it runs away.” I needn’t have worried as it decided to put on a show for me that morning.

Tail got cut off because I was in too much of a hurry thinking MR SQUIRREL was going to run away. . .

”Maybe if I don’t make eye contact with that lady, she will take her camera and go away. . . I’m having a bad photo day.”

”OK, if she isn’t going to leave, I will stand very still and maybe she will think I am a statue and go away after all. I mean, how many photos of a statue would one want?”

”It didn’t work. OK, giving her the BACK treatement!”

”Darn! She’s still there. Is she nuts or something? I would like some nuts for a snack about now. . . maybe I should go elsewhere -- it’s obvious she doesn’t have any nuts for me. It’s even more obvious that she isn’t about to stop taking photos of me. OK I'm outta here!”

Battleship Ron made my photo sequence into an animated gif :
